Well, here it is folks – real, live chickens on our patio where we’ve laid laminate flooring in order to test out just how tough it is. So far, disappointingly, it’s held up pretty well. We even had some bloggers and Realtor-types around to confirm it.
But, we figured barnyard animals should add some colour to the proceedings. And in order to keep our promotion from doing a WKRP In Cincinnati Turkey Promotion on us, Matt’s helped with a sturdy safety net, cooping in the chickens while they’re here. All in all, we were pleased to have them, along with their handler, Randy (thanks!). Take a look.
Part 2 tomorrow, kids!
Cheers,
Rob.

Chicken ‘n’ laminate?
We are incredulous. Flabbergasted. Terrified, even. But, kind of excited too.
In speaking to Jeff, CEO of BuildDirect, it appears that he is fully in favour of the chicken idea. But, clearly there are some practical concerns. For instance, what about bird safety? Well, we’ve made sure that any chickens on our outdoor laminate flooring will be made as safe as can be. Here’s Marc to explain that, and Matt to tell us exactly how he’s preparing our patio for the upcomng avian entourage…
The things we’ll do to get attention…
Cheers!

As promised, we had a few of our friends around to see our laminate floor, which we’re trying to wreck by installing it outside in the middle of February. It’s been out there for three weeks! In any case, we wanted you to get the opinions of the experts. So our friends from the blogging community, and from the Realtor community too here in Vancouver obliged us. Here’s what they said.
Thanks to everyone who came, and everyone who meant to be there too, but couldn’t. We’re definitely going to use the patio more this year, wrecked floor or not!
Now, with a policy of full disclosure in place, it behooves me to tell you that it’s true that we plied our friends with beer, and some nibblies too. Thanks to Rona for helping with that side of it! The conclusion we’ve come to so far is that we have to find new ways of doing harm to our stalwart floor which as Matt mentioned yesterday doesn’t really show much sign of wear!
Steve Jagger’s idea which he mentions in today’s video is duly noted of course. But, you’d have to have a lose screw to bring a bunch of chickens to a penthouse suite just to see if their scratchings, peckings, and droppings will ruin a floor you’ve installed outside.
Right?
Cheers,
Rob.

Our resident flooring expert Matt returned from the 2009 Surfaces show in Vegas with one thing on his mind; our outdoor laminate flooring which we have installed on our penthouse patio here in downtown Vancouver BC. Well, it wasn’t the first thing on his mind. It was at least the second. Here’s what Matt had to say:
So, it seems to the expert eye that our flooring hasn’t taken all that much moisture damage, if any. It must be said that we can’t get underneath the flooring at this point to really tell for sure how much moisture damage there is. We’re sure there must be some. But, everyone here is surprised how little damage our flooring has sustained.
Tonight is our big party, and a lot of our friends are coming over to check the damage for themselves, just so you’re not just taking our word for it. So, stayed tuned, folks!
Cheers!

It’s time for a little celebration folks, and here’s Marc to explain what we’re gonna do.
We’re excited to reach out to our friends our vibrant local blogging community to include them into the fun. Marc is a presumptuous upstart here (and pretty much in general, actually), pulling no punches with his intention to encourage them to write about us once they’re finished checking out the floor. That would obviously be cool if they decide to do that, because it means even more people will be able to see what we’re up to. And there will be more to see!
But, mostly it’s an excuse to make new friends, and hang out with current ones, and to drink at work. And being so close to the SkyTrain, no one’s gonna drive home!
Door prizes have been donated by our friends at Ubertor, and also by author and speaker Shane Gibson, another pal of ours. Also, we’re going to collect some informal pay-what-you-can donations for one of our favourite charities, Canucks Place Children’s Hospice.
And just as a side note, you’ll notice something about Marc in this video. He’s wearing the same shirt he wore in yesterday’s video. That’s because we shot the episodes back to back. Because today, Marc’s in Vegas, baby!
It’s not what you think. Well, I suppose it probably is what you think. But, there’s more.
Some of our other BuildDirect guys, now with added Marc, have been down at the Surfaces Flooring Show this past week to connect with some of our peers in the industry. If you’re there, look us up!
Cheers!

Laminate Flooring Impact Test!
Today’s installment of Watch Us Wreck a Floor is kind of what they call a microcosm; it sums up what the whole thing’s about, all within one episode. Of course, this means that our Marc is going to break a lot of stuff on the floor to see what it will take to wreck it. With his bare hands. Take a look:
So, Marc had fun. You can see that the psychotic gleam in his eye is slightly more pronounced in today’s episode. Filming this, I must admit I got a little nervous, as stoked as I was to see our outdoor laminate flooring get a beating. Marc got into it. And I thought he might turn on me.
If you watch, you can see me in the reflection of the window behind Marc. In this respect, our video is much like the video for 80s hairdo band A Flock of Seagulls with their 1982 hit ‘I Ran’. We have less hair than A Flock of Seagulls had, of course. And there’s no tinfoil in our video. But, you can see the camera in the mirror in that video too.
Cheers!
Rob.

One of the specific test which is run by the EPLF in order to award a laminate flooring product an AC rating is an abrasion test that involves castors, which are those rolly things on the feet of office chairs. This is done very scientifically of course, ignoring how much fun it is to use those rolly things they call castors on a smooth, and durable surface.
But, we can’t ignore the fun part – that’s crazy talk! So, Marc and Rona were set up with their own chairs to play a little blind chicken. And of course to try and wreck a laminate floor in the process. The filming today was done in two sessions – third person and first person. Here’s the third person perspective, which I shot:
I ran out of juice, as Marc is keen to point out. But, Marc got the first person perspective on film. For those of you prone to motion sickness, break out the Gravol…
It should be stated that our castors are plastic, not metal. So, that may have an impact on the results. But, I should say this too. That Marc and Rona, as I type, are still out there rolling around on their wheely-chairs, like a couple of hyper-caffinated rollerskates. Actually, I’ve never seen a hyper-caffinated rollerskate. I’m not even sure it’s possible to infuse a rollerskate with caffeine. But, I think you know what I mean.
Cheers!

Hey everyone,
Just a point of housekeeping folks, and we’ll return to our regularly scheduled program. We’ve had some issues with our live stream, with mysterious invisible gremlins crawling all over it. I put the problem to an online forum, and was given some advice, not before being told that saying ‘my feed is a pain in the ass’ was out of bounds on the thread. Perhaps it was. But, it didn’t feel like it at the time.
Luckily, Dan, Dan the IT Man has helped out. And at the time of this typing, the feed is live. If it goes down, we’ll tear a strip out of Dan, Dan the IT man. Well, we won’t. He’s a great guy. And he’s getting me a MacBook that hasn’t arrived yet…
Anyway, this is a post of apology folks – we’ve wasted your clicks. Please do check out the feed, particularly around noonish and mid-afternoon around three-ish when we do our filming.
More video action from Marc and his trained moustache coming soon!
Cheers!

Laminate Floor Can-Crushing
It is important to recycle. And we at BuildDirect do our part, particularly when it comes to beer cans. The fun part of course is the drinking, as everyone knows. But, there’s another fun part folks – the crushing. Well, maybe it’s only fun for us. And we are talking about the cans, not the headaches the next morning…
This is the way we look at it. When you’re attempting to test the limits of a laminate floor, with the intention of utterly destroying any faint hope that they’re going to be left unwrecked after being installed outside, you gotta do what’cha gotta do. Take a look:
It should be said that the article which Marc is showing off is bona fide – we didn’t mock that up to fake anyone out.
ahem.
We got our pictures in the paper! Without getting arrested! Again! Kidding!
Cheers,
Rob.

Well, it’s more like dog day morning and afternoon, really.
Bringing dogs into the office is a unique idea here at BuildDirect, and not one we’ve ever strictly considered. But, for the sake of wrecking a floor at least, today is special. One of the major concerns for people who care about any kind of flooring is the damage that claws, urine, and other stuff, tend to do to a floor.
So, Marc brought in his dog Luca Brasi (brown fur) to show us what a dog’s claws, and other things, can do to our particular laminate floor, installed ill-advisedly on our patio. Frank, one of our sales guys brought in his dog, too – Bella (black fur). And John, who’s VP of Finance, brought in the very well-behaved (mostly) Sid (golden-white fur) to round out our canine wrecking crew. To start the proceedings, we had a bit of a pre-game warm up between Luca Brasi and Bella. Take a look:
Then, we had a bit of a tenuous start, with some pre-play jitters that required a plastic bag and a squeegee. Take a look:
Overall, the dogs weren’t nearly as dedicated to destroying our outdoor laminate as much as destroying our indoor flooring. Maybe they think outdoor laminate flooring is a dumb idea. Let’s see what Luca Brasi thinks:
Still, despite their shyness on the floor they exposed it to all of the things that dogs generally expose the average floor to: hair, dander, urine, and… you know, the other thing. And of course, even if they were less exuberant outside than they were inside, you can hear the sound of their nails on the wear layer of the floor.
Here’s an interesting tidbit, folks. When you work at Google or at Amazon, you’re encouraged to bring your dog to the office with you. It improves work-life balance, productivity since people tend to stay longer at their offices, and generally is good for the dogs too. That’s the kind of company culture they’ve got going there.
But, I wonder what kind of floors they’ve got at Google and Amazon…
Cheers!
Rob.
